Meet Ida

Welcome and thanks for dropping by. I’m Ida Shessel and
this is Ida Shessel

My Story

Early in my career when I was working in the corporate world and first asked to give presentations, the experience was anything but exciting. I didn’t know anything about engaging an audience or creating a dynamic learning experience. I would just copy the same presentation techniques I had seen others use: give the group a bunch of information, show them a few dry slides, and ask if there were any questions. Repeat.

There never were any questions. You know why? Because the audience members were suffering from TEGO – Their Eyes Glazed Over. I quickly realized that showing a bunch of wordy slides and dumping information on people was not an effective learning experience for them. The “spray the audience with information and pray it sticks” technique wasn’t working.

Something had to change! What was the secret to preventing my audience members from being bored, distracted, unfocused, and forgetful?

I wanted to lead dynamic sessions — presentations that rocked the room. I wanted everyone to participate enthusiastically — and most importantly, I wanted them to gain lots of “aha” experiences — along with new skills and knowledge that they could use long afterward to solve the problems that had brought them to me in the first place. And …I wanted them to come back to me for more!

I began to study and do research. I honed my skills and even went back to university to get a Master’s degree in Adult Education. Soon after, I became an instructor at a local college and then later a consultant with an award-winning seminar company. For 15 years, I designed and delivered train-the-trainer workshops on their behalf at conferences and meetings across North America and beyond — for Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, and non-profits.

Fast Forward to Today

I’ve now been a professional speaker, author, facilitator, consultant, and coach for over 30 years. I’ve worked with individuals and teams in leading organizations in the fields of technology, finance, pharmaceuticals, government, automotive, telecommunications, gaming, retail, and more.

I have my own system now. I help my clients understand their role as a “tour guide” — because leading a presentation or facilitating a workshop is really just taking your audience on a journey to a learning destination. So, I’ve created the powerful 5-step Rock the Room Road Map© that helps presenters be dynamic engaging “tour guides”. People appreciate having a structure that they can use to create and lead engaging presentations, and yes, workshops too  — one that helps them plan the best ways to start, work through, and end their sessions. It gives them confidence they didn’t have before and helps them make a long-term difference in the lives of their attendees. Structure creates success.

My teaching philosophy “Engage, Encourage, Empower” is the foundation for my interactive participant-centered approach and I enjoy challenging my attendees to grow beyond their current skill levels. I am passionate about guiding them to apply what they learn immediately and ensuring they leave my sessions impressed with their own achievements as well as their abilities to engage and empower others.

As a strong believer in life-long learning and cross-pollination of ideas, I integrate what I’ve learned from a variety of disciplines into my programs. I’ve studied with the Coaching Institute, Second City Training Center, NLP Possibilities with DHE (Design Human Engineering), and many business coaches.

In order to share my knowledge, I’ve written several business books, including

I have a B.Sc. in Psychology from the University of Toronto and an M.Ed. in Adult Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.
